The Lyrebird
The Lyrebird
is a native Australian bird, the largest of all singing birds, whose remarkable
voice can often be heard but the bird is very shy and is not often seen
in the wild.
The lyrebirds'
tail feathers are about 2 feet long. When relaxed they droop like a peacock's
train. When raised they take on the shape of a lyre. The male bird uses
his fine voice and his gorgeous feathers during his mating dance which
he performs on a stage (a mound of dirt). The lyrebird is an expert mimic.
In Australian
Aboriginal mythology the lyrebird is the storyteller.
The legendary
Lola Montez was so captivated by the lyrebird that she took one back to
California with her to join her menagerie of unusual pets, after her successful
tour in 1855.
